The origin of “Red King” and “Black General”
红帅黑将的由来
象棋中的红帅指的是刘邦，黑将指的是项羽。
In Chinese chess, “Red King” refers to Liu Bang, and “Black General” refers to Xiang Yu.
Liu bang once killed a snake called the “White Emperor”.
刘邦曾经杀过一条名为白帝子的蛇。
There is a saying that, the man who killed “White Emperor” would receive the title of “Red Emperor”, so the army of Liu Bang unified in the color of red.
有传言说，杀白帝子的人被叫做赤帝子，所以刘邦日后的军队就统一用红色。
When Xiang Yu was young, he saw Qin Shi Huang’s royal progress, just like a dignified black dragon, and that made him envious.
项羽年轻的时候曾经看见秦始皇出巡，像一条黑龙一样威震四方，羡慕不已。
Later, Xiang Yu's army represented with the color of black.
后来项羽带军便以黑色作为军队代表。
Since then, the two sides of the Chu river had formed a confrontation between red and black armies, and the color of red and black have been continued in Chinese chess.
从此以后，楚河两界形成红黑两军对峙，红黑两色由此延续下来。

The war between Kingdom of Chu and Han Dynasty started from the first year August of Han Dynasty (206 BC) to fifth year December of Han Dynasty (about the beginning of BC 202). This was a large-scale war waged by the two major groups fighting for power, namely, the war between Xiang Yu, King of Chu Kingdom and Liu Bang, the Emperor of Han Dynasty.
楚汉争霸即汉元年（公元前206年）八月至汉五年十二月（约于前202年年初），西楚霸王项羽、。楚汉之争以项羽败亡，刘邦建立西汉王朝而告终。
